(no music yet)
(just interview, facebook interview)
(a great guy with great tunes)
Me: hey i can interview you on here right now, so that it is an actual conversation haha
Derrick: damn yeah!
Me: haha alright, why do you wanna have practice bullshit erased from history?
Derrick: I've never actually released anything that any form of One Hundred Year Ocean has recorded and most of the old recordings are poorly performed and recorded even worse. I only recently starting learning how to sing so now I'm extremely embarrassed by all the old practice demos / live stuff.
Me: ahha but I love it man! well thats the first question out of the way, and I am already liking this whole conversation style of interview haha,
Derrick: I'm glad! Form interviews are usually kind of boring.
Me: Dont I know it! Okay, number two, why the name One Hundred Year Ocean
Derrick: The name comes from the Terry Gilliam film "Tideland"
Me: ellaborate?
double l's
Derrick: Haha, kind of hard to explain but the main character is a young girl who pretty much lives in her imagination. She befriends a mentally challenged neighbor boy who is also very imaginative. He calls the fields of wheat near their houses the One Hundred Year Ocean.
Me: Thats a more interesting story for coming up with a name Id say!, Whats to come from One Hundred Year Ocean? you mentioned you just started to learn how to sing?
Derrick: haha, I've actually been using youtube videos and the help of my friends to figure stuff out. We're currently recording 6 songs for an EP called "Poison Smoak", I'm going to release it on my fake record label on cassette and cd-r before our tour. I really hope that actually happens. I've had a lot of false starts working on the record by myself but I feel a lot better about what this lineup is doing with my songs. After that I'm going to be on a 4-way split with David Bello, Banned Books, and Zebras & Bulls Fight Tonight!. I've got some stuff I'm working on for a full length too.
Me: Wow! So much in the works already! You mentioned false starts?
Derrick: I would start working on recording the songs by myself, playing all the instruments but it would always be after I had not played drums in months and months and was never happy with how stuff came out. I don't have money to go to studio so I do everything at home, teaching myself how to record / mix through trial and error, the internet, and some friends who know what they are doing.
This ep was actually supposed to be finished last march before a solo tour I did with my roommates, Book Slave.
and stuff with TWIABP kept me pretty busy too.
Me: Funny you mention TWIABP because I sent you guys an email today I think asking for an interview haha! But atleast youre trying am I right not very many people would continue to push and try to get their stuff going and it shows how much you really love the music
Derrick: I've been writing songs for this project since early 2007. I even recorded and scrapped an entire full length. Playing music is the only thing I really want to do with my life. I currently play in 7 or 8 bands that all have band practice / play shows somewhat regularly.
Me: Damn so you spread yourself pretty thin, but it seems like you know what youre doing, just a quick questions, do you mind if i put a live video with this interview, or refrain?
Derrick: hahaha, which video?
Me: its not punk haha
but were trying
Derrick: ahasdhfha no way!
Me: come on! its on the little thing where I make the post, I mean I can delete it, but I dont want its great!
Derrick: there is an acoustic video of 1576 that i don't hate you could use
Me: haha When did your music writing start? what influenced you to begin it all?
Derrick: I started playing in bands when I was 14 years old and I'm now 26. I can hardly remember a time since that I wasn't in a band / multiple bands.
Me: haha do you remember what you were listening to back then?
Derrick: I was really really into stuff like At the Drive-In, The Postage Era, The White Octave, Fugazi, Cursive, and Texas Is The Rason. Those were probably my absolute favorite bands in high school.
*Texas is the Reason
and a lot of mid-career Piebald
Me: Would you say any of your projects is your main project or do they all share equal time?
Derrick: TWIABP takes up the most of my time but I'm constatnly writing songs for OHYO. I'd say I have somewhere around 30 songs for this project written. Getting things ready for this upcoming tour with Empire! Empire! has been pretty time consuming though.
Me: I saw Empire live once, it was pretty great! Which was your first band ever started? What happened to that? May I call you Sexy Derrick Shanholtzer on my blog when i write your responses for this interview?
Derrick: Empire! Empire! have killed it every time I've seen them play. Always with a different band. Our dudes are actually playing as his band for this tour. I think the first band I was ever ever in that actually practiced was called The Thomas Addition. It was just terrible terrible pop punk. I don't think we ever played a show but I kept putting us on fliers anyway. My first real band was when I was 15 or 16 and was called Hands Tied to the Wheel. That band played a handful of shows and had some terrible home recordings. We wanted to be At the Drive-In.
Me: haha i saw E!E! when the band was mountain for clouds that filled for them! Okay lets get a last great question, We know youve got alot of songs ready for this project, and you spread yourself very thin to play in so many bands, what were you trying to get, was all your music just expression? or were you hurt by something or someone? and how have you changed in your writings?
Derrick: All the songs I write for OHYO are really personal but are never ultimately about anyone person or experience specifically. Just my life in general. I don't really have that outlet for expression in TWIABP since the songs are written collaborative and mostly about the collective experience of life. Making sound is fun, it's my favorite thing to do so I'm constantly occupying myself with new ways to do it. All of my bands are pretty different from each other, some more similar to others, some wildly different. When I was younger I didn't really have much to write about so my lyrics were more abstract and ultimately not about anything real. I think everything I write is a sort of reflection, journal entry, or a collage of imagery that I can't let myself forget.
Me: Wow, what a great answer, you're really a great musician and your music is something everyone should be looking out for and listening to
Derrick: That means a lot to me, thank you so much for being interested. I was really stoked when you asked to interview me about OHYO.
the OHYO ep won't be finished until right before that tour
i left my laptop charger in wv while i was home for xmas and i'm waiting for it to get shipped here
but i'm leaving for TWIABP tour on thursday
then I have 3 days to get everything done before leaving for this tour. hectic shit!
most everything is recorded except for vocals. some guitar stuff needs re-done. then mixing
Me: Thats such good news to know that it is finally on its way to being finished! and then youll be able to get the word about your music out more, thats what i want these interviews to do, is to give people insight and keep them informed. awesome thanks so much for this interview Derrick
Derrick: no problem! thank you for doing what you do. your blog is pretty rad.
i'll get the recordings to you asap so you can post the interview
