Suns

(pretty great stuff)
(also)
(interview)

1. Why the name suns?

I wrote it down and it just sort of stuck.

2. I went through your pictures (who cares) so many show pics, are the shows for you guys also so radical?

Yeah, I think we have a very dynamic chemistry in just playing music together in general, so when we are energized at a show, sometimes that chemistry can really explode.

3. When will there be new music?

We are going to put out a full length in March called "The Engine Room".

4. What are upcoming plans for the band?

We have a new guitarist guy who used to play in a pretty awesome band called fugue and us four are going to New Hampshire for  the second week of January to finish writing the record. We'll record in February and have it up by March, then play shows and raise money to put out a 12".

5. Who writes the different parts of the music? Is it collaborative, or more of a piecing together?

I write the songs and bring them to Will Ponturo who plays drums and we figure out the overall sound and direction we want to go in. From there, we altogether work on sequencing parts, tweaking transitions, and changing up rhythm patterns.

6. When did the group start? How did you all come together?

I started a project called Suns in 2007, which was essentially me playing poorly written, sappy acoustic stuff with my friend playing viola. I decided it needed to be a band, so I asked Willy Ponturo in the beginning of 2008 and he and I went through several players and recorded a few soggy ep's. In the summer of 2010, we really reconnected with our old friend Billy. He used to play jazz gigs with Willy and one day he started playing bass on some of the songs we had in mind for Be Good Boy. Everything immediately connected from there, and the chemistry that Willy and Bill rhythmically hold down still blows my fucking mind. We put out a demo plus an ep, and now we have a second guitarist, on the way to complete a full length.

7. How do you feel that you have improved from The Three Songs to Be Good Boy? Is there room for improvement?

There's always room for improvement, but above everything we are focusing much more on making a cohesive and interesting album that creates it's own sense of place for the listener.
